PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER


About the novel

The best-selling thriller of the brilliant and murderous perfumer Jean-Baptiste Grenouille was first published in Switzerland in early 1985. It made author Patrick Suskind, who was born in 1949 near Munich. The novel has sold over 12 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 42 languages. It is studied at universities around the world, in all the various disciplines with which it deals: psychology, history, criminology, law and of course literature.

About the movie

After Grenouille is born, his mother tries to hide child under the table in a market place. But the newborn screams and is saved by a passer-by. The mother is hanged. Grenouille spends the first years of his life in the orphanage, he possesses a phenomenal sense of smell. Later he starts to work in a tannery, he visits Paris and he follows the scent of beautiful plum vendor. The girl senses a sudden chill in the air, but he loses the scent and he knows he must capture it again...

Then he finds new job in Paris for perfumer Baldini. Grenouille quickly shows his talent at creating fragrances which will help Baldini`s reputation. He goes to Grasse, because only there mystherious method is being used. He want to capture scents of beautiful women`s bodies.

During few weeks young beautiful girls are being murdered. The marchant Richis starts to fear for his daughter Laura. He killed twelve girls for capture their scent and he is missing only one scent...scent of Laura.

On the day of his execution he drops few dashs of his perfect perfum and everybody starts embrasing.Even the father of the murdered girl throws his arms around Grenouille crying for forgiveness.

Grenouille comes back to place where he was born and he sprinkles his perfume, all people only think they love him. All that remains of him is the flacon and one last drop of the most valuable perfume in the world.
