In south-easterly Asia, women from Kareni people, where also belong Padaung tribe, wear unconventional decoration till now. Nobody knows why crossed anybody mind to put heavy hoops on the neck.
The tradition of putting hoops on, carry over till now thanks to profitable business. Tourists pay for the look on the women, who are situated to special touristic reservations and look like exhibited peace in the zoo, with pleasure.
Family fortune on the neck
In Thai town- Chiang-Rai- there are a lot of touristic offices, which take you on the trip to jungle where Padaung tribes live till now, just for little money.
Today the irrational tradition of putting hoops on, which weight is sometimes 5 – 10 kilograms, would probably lapse if there are no interested people about “the excursion to the past.” That why they put them on to little girls up to now. It starts at the fifth year of their life and when the neck gets used to hoops they gradually add other until their neck is deformed and inadequately lengthened to 30 centimeters. Hoops are made from brass of gold color and that way men put off their fortune on the safe place when they were away.
Local women have expressive difficulties with movement. Another problem is cold. Since in the mountains temperature goes down, brass hoops absorb cold fast and become very uncomfortable. On the other hand during the immense tropical heat, when temperature reaches more than 45 degrees, women are sweating and they don’t avoid different skin diseases.
The false myth
Information wide- spread between amateurs is that in the past to woman, who didn’t admire her husband, took the hoops off and she died. But in reality the superstition, that after removal woman will dye, isn’t truth. But during the cleaning brass decoration– if they take it off- women have to be very careful because their muscles and bones aren’t accustomed to hold heaviness of the head.
